Agree the handover before development starts

Make source files, build instructions, verification records and remaining issues part of the project conversation.

Define the engineering package

List the design files, firmware or software source, manufacturing information and documentation needed for the next stage. File formats and tool versions should be agreed where they affect reuse.

Make the work reproducible

Record how to build the software, configure the hardware and run the agreed checks. Include the relevant versions and the known operating conditions.

Keep open issues visible

A useful handover distinguishes completed requirements, accepted limitations and unresolved issues. Each remaining item should have an agreed next action.

Connect deliverables to milestones

Tie each review or payment milestone to specific deliverables and acceptance evidence. Update the scope explicitly when requirements change.

Discuss ownership and third-party dependencies

Clarify the source files to be handed over, permitted reuse and any third-party licenses or tools needed to maintain the product. Capture the agreed terms in the project documents.

Start with a short project brief.
