How to prepare a useful electronics project brief

A practical starting point for discussing scope, interfaces, deliverables and the next engineering milestone.

Start with the application

Explain who will use the product, the task it performs and the environment in which it operates. A short description of the real use case helps the engineering discussion.

Describe the current stage

State whether you have an idea, a specification, an existing design or a prototype. Identify which items already work and which need support.

List the constraints

  • Power source and operating conditions
  • Inputs, outputs and communication interfaces
  • Size, enclosure and mounting constraints
  • Intended production quantity and target dates
  • Known components, suppliers or design restrictions

Define the next deliverable

A design review, schematic package, working prototype and production handover are different scopes. State what you need at the next milestone and what evidence will demonstrate completion.

Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions

Label the items that are mandatory, preferred or still open. This makes it easier to identify risks and prepare a realistic proposal.

Share information in stages

Use a non-confidential overview for the first inquiry. Discuss confidentiality and file-sharing arrangements before exchanging proprietary design files.
